If you aren’t already on Twitter you are missing out. Twitter is a great tool for promoting your business or game. According to Twitter, followers can help you achieve reach, sales and word of mouth. While some opt for a quick fix like buying followers, we do not recommend this. It does not provide the kind of engagement that organic followers do (people who follow your account because you are of actual interest to them). To gain more organic followers we have provided you with a few simple ways to do so:

  • Be active and interesting on Twitter. Being active and posting interesting things on Twitter increases your chances of people following you. Twitter users are always on the lookout for new information, valuable resources and motivation. You can use this for your Twitter strategy to create and share tweets valuable to your followers. For example, why not show someone in real-life enjoying the new game you are developing? People love when brands add a human touch. A quick effective way to do this is by snapping a photo of someone playing your game and enjoying it! It is not recommended to do this all the time but if you are lacking images to show your audience, adding a human element is a creative tactic.
  • Use your Twitter audience to ask questions. People love answering questions and giving their opinions. You can use your Twitter followers to ask questions and receive feedback to increase your Twitter activity. However, your questions need to be short and to-the-point. Your questions should be ones that can be answered in a matter of seconds. Surprisingly, Fill-in-the-blank tweets are also one of the best ways to increase your Twitter activity.
  • Post reviews about your game or business! By posting reviews from actual players or customers you can show your Twitter audience that your game or business really is awesome. You can even take screenshots of reviews and post them on your Twitter account for a visual appeal. Tweets with images get retweeted 35% more and result in 55% increase in leads. Retweeting is a great tool. If someone has something great to say about your game or business, retweet them! These are all great ways to show that you actually listen to your fans!

Ways To Increase Your Followers On Twitter - BMT Micro

In order to gain more followers you have to break the ice and interact with others on Twitter. Keep in mind that Twitter is a social media platform which means it is meant for social interactions. You will be surprised how many followers you gain just by interacting on Twitter. Hashtags are also a great tool for you to use. We recently posted a blog about hashtagging 101 and the power of strategically using them on Twitter. #GameDev, #ScreenshotSaturday and #FF (Follow Friday) are all great hashtags to use to reach a larger audience. How to Promote Your Game On A Budget 2

Game development has become so accessible it seems like everywhere you look someone is creating a new game. With so many games being released on a daily basis, gaining the recognition your game deserves can be very difficult regardless of the quality of your game. As we have mentioned before, there are many examples of beautifully designed games that are potentially profitable but end up never making it. Why? It is a common trend among game developers that they let their talent shine when it comes to production and design but they lack the skill-set when it comes to marketing.

Marketing can seriously increase your games chances of success but why do so few developers invest in marketing? It is because so many still believe in the myth that successful marketing requires a huge budget. Most developers don’t realize that they don’t need to spend a lot on marketing to get success and that’s mainly because they don’t know where to start.

First, you need to create promotional materials that will develop excitement about your game. These materials are pieces of marketing content that are so alluring they compel people to share and start discussions. Without these promotional materials and following their best practices, you cannot successfully market your game. Below are some pros and cons that you may want to consider when using these promotional materials.

Trailer Video

  • Needs to be 2 minutes or less. If you decide on a longer trailer video, you really risk losing your audience’s attention before your trailer ends.
  • You need an attention-grabbing introduction. If your trailer does not cut to the point or show something interesting within about 3-5 seconds, you may risk losing your audience’s attention.
  • Include your studio’s logo – get your brand in front of your audience.
  • Show in-game footage. One of the biggest complaints on game trailers is when no gameplay is shown – you need to always include this.
  • Music/sound effects are important too – think about this as you are working on your trailer, not at the last minute. These really contribute to the quality of your video.
  • Include game reviews (if possible). This adds a sense of authority to your trailer.
  • End with what’s next. Don’t leave your audience with a black screen at the end. You’ll lose the opportunity to tell people how to get your game, where to learn more about your game, and so on.

Screenshots

  • Don’t post screenshots you took 5 days into development. They will stay on the internet and haunt you forever.
  • Your screenshots need to be hi-resolution. This assures that if you screenshots are blown up they don’t look pixelated.
  • Pay attention to composition.
  • Make sure your screenshots are well lit. Your screenshots need to highlight your games most valuable aspects. Make them stand out with your lighting.

Press Release

  • The First paragraph of your press release needs to grab attention. You need to summarize the game theme and include all important information about your game.
  • Use testimonials or reviews because third-party opinions of your game matter.
  • Include the basics about your company and make your contact information clear. You want to make it easy for press to get in contact with you.
  • Send your screenshots and trailer with your press release to give them everything they need. These can aid in grabbing attention and sale points.
  • Use hyperlinks in your text because it is a quick and easy way to click over to your site or game.
  • Don’t fill your email entirely of buzzwords. It doesn’t actually say anything about your game.
  • Don’t send a press email to 20 editors. Send your emails separately and take some consideration as to who you are talking to.

Landing Page

  • Your landing page’s sole purpose is to convert visitors into customers. make a conversion. Remove navigation or anything that distracts away from your landing page.
  • You need a grabbing headline. This is probably the only piece of text someone is going to read when they visit your landing page. You need to make sure it motivates a conversion.
  • Social sharing icons – create a fan base by allowing them to share your content.
  • You need to have a strong call-to-action button. This is your overall goal for customers visiting your page. Make sure this button stands out from the rest of your page (Buy Now, Download Now, etc.).
  • Include your trailer video or screenshots on your landing page. This encourages the decision your potential players have to make if they want to buy or download your game. Get your audience excited about your game.
  • Include your contact information. You need to make it easy for people and press to reach you. A simple tool you can create to aid with this is a press kit.

Development Blog

  • Update consistently – post at least one time per week. However, this does not mean posting a list of all the little bugs you have fixed the past days. Post content that gets your players excited about the game and wanting more.
  • Use images – players want to see what you are working on.
  • Link from the home page – make it accessible from your landing page.
  • RSS feed – reward interested people with an easy way to follow you.
  • Social sharing buttons. Make it easy for your followers to share your blog with their social network – it’s free marketing for you.
  • Email subscription – again, an easy way interested people can follow your blog. Every time you post to your blog they will get a message and keep coming back.
  • Promote at the end of the post – just like ending your trailer with next steps, do the same on your blog and let people know where they can get your game.

Social Media

  • At the very least you should have a Facebook page and a Twitter profile.
On Twitter #gamedev and #ScreenshotSaturday are your best friends.
  • Do your research beforehand to see what social media channels players spend most of their time on.
  • Make sure you consistently post across all channels.
  • Don’t post updates in the middle of the night. Do you research on different social media platforms to see when is the best time to post.
  • Once you start building a community and start getting players interacting with you, make sure you actively respond to all messages, comments, etc.

Hashtagging 101 - BMT Micro

Hashtags create a unique opportunity for businesses to connect with audiences and implement new branding strategies. Twitter was the first social network to utilize hashtags and they soon became one of the most important components of a tweet. Hashtags made it possible for Twitter users to engage in conversations based on specific discussion topics. Facebook, Instagram, Vine, Pinterest, Google + and Tumblr have also jumped on the band wagon and incorporated hashtags into their platforms. Although, just because everyone is using them doesn’t mean you need to go hashtag overboard. Like any marketing technique, there are right and wrong ways to use hashtags.

Types of Hashtags for Businesses

  • Brand Hashtags: Hashtags that are brand-specific contain your business’ name or slogan. They are promoted continuously throughout your marketing efforts. Brand-specific Hashtags generate brand awareness and spread word-of-mouth.
  • Campaign Hashtags: Campaign hashtags promote the marketing campaigns that your business is currently running. An example of this would be using a unique hashtag that people can use enter a sweepstakes your business is currently offering.
  • Trending Hashtags: Trending hashtags are ones focused around the latest news and popular topics in real time. Trending hashtags are ones you know will be heavily used because there is already a high traffic conversation around the topic. Trending topics are the most popular subjects discussed on Twitter or Google +. There is a lot of insight you can gain from researching trending hashtags and it is a great way to learn what others are interested or not interested in. Businesses can also use trending hashtags to their advantage by gaining visibility and expanding their audience just by joining in on a trending conversation related to their industry.

Optimizing your Hashtags

  • Keep it simple – When creating a hashtag, try making it as short as possible while keeping it relevant. Shorter hashtags are easier for your audience to remember and post.
  • Make it unique – There are many hashtags out there on the Internet. When you are creating hashtags they should be unique to all the other hashtags out there. Do a quick search to see if it’s a hashtag that’s already in use.

The Benefits of Hashtags

  • Increase user-generated content – The main goal of hashtags are to promote user-generated content. When a hashtag is promoted correctly it gives your audience a reason to share. Brands have the opportunity to pull content from time to time and publicly recognize an individual user based on their use of a hashtag. The possibility of being selected will encourage people to use your brand hashtags even more.
  • Keep your conversations in one place – By designated a hashtag to a specific conversation or campaign, you will be able to track all the feedback tied to your brand and that hashtag.
  • Spread word-of-mouth and increase brand awareness – Hashtags can be a cost-effective alternative for promoting your marketing campaigns. By getting your customers to post your hashtag, you have the opportunity to multiply your impression and campaign reach. A hashtag gets people talking about a topic and links every conversation around that hashtag back to your brand. This can expand your reach to new audiences through the most powerful type of advertising: word-of-mouth.

How Many Hashtags Should You Use?

  • Facebook – When Facebook first introduced hashtags, it didn’t work well. There has been a lot of research done on whether or not hashtags have any impact on Facebook for increasing reach. It turns out the answer is no. Surprisingly, Facebook posts without hashtags outperform Facebook posts with hashtags.
  • Twitter – Twitter invented hashtags. Tweets with hashtags get 2 times more engagement than tweets without. That means by using a hashtag in your tweet you get 2 times more clicks, retweets, favorites, and replies. However, you’ll want to keep to your hashtags to no more than two. Tweets with more than 2 hashtags drops engagement by an average of 17%.
  • Instagram – Instagram is a hotspot for hashtags. Research shows that interactions are highest on Instagam posts with 11+ hashtags!
  • LinkedIn – There is no need for hashtags on LinkedIn.
  • Google + – Google + is Google’s social network and hashtags are now built into Google searches. If you aren’t already using hashtags on Google +, it is a smart move to start using them now. A fun fact about Google + is that you can double your opportunities of being found by adding hashtags in your comments as well as your posts. There really is no limit to how many hashtags to use on Google + as long as they are relevant to the content your are sharing.
  • Pinterest – The Pinterest search is strong enough that you don’t need hashtags to find content. Like LinkedIn, there is no need for hashtags on Pinterest either.

Hashtags have been around for almost a decade and are showing no signs of disappearing any time soon. If you are not already using hashtags in your social media marketing it is time to start. We are pleased to announce that BMT Micro is now offering Bitcoin as another payment option for our vendors and their customers!

What Are Bitcoins?
Bitcoins are a digital currency. Transactions are made with no central authority or middlemen – meaning, no banks. Bitcoin is the first decentralized peer-to-peer payment network powered by its users.

Who Developed Bitcoins?
No one is quite sure who the face is behind the creation of Bitcoin. The only information the developer (or developers) revealed to the public is a name, Satoshi Nakamoto. Satoshi Nakamoto created the initial software implementation of Bitcoin and released it as an open-source software in 2009. In 2010, Nakamoto gradually stopped contributing to the project and turned over development to the Bitcoin community (which continues to maintain the core Bitcoin software).

How Do You Use Bitcoins?
Bitcoins are kept in a digital wallet either in the cloud or on a user’s computer. The wallet is similar to a virtual bank account. The wallet allows users to send or receive Bitcoins, pay for goods or simply save their Bitcoins.

The Bitcoin system is becoming increasingly popular. You can use Bitcoins to buy anything you would use any other kind of currency; however, the business you are wanting to purchase from has to accept Bitcoins. BMT Micro’s vendors now have the convenience and ability to offer payment in Bitcoins to their customers. If you would like to learn more about Bitcoin or becoming a vendor of BMT Micro, please feel free to contact our vendor services at vendors@bmtmicro.com for additional information.

We know it can be difficult sometimes trying to maintain a successful digital marketing plan. If you aren’t seeing the results you like from your current digital marketing plan, it may be a good time to do some spring-cleaning. Spring-cleaning will give you the opportunity to re-evaluate your current plan and make sure you aren’t making these common digital marketing mistakes.

Spring Cleaning - Eliminate These Common Digital Marketing Mistakes - BMT Micro

Mistake #1: Not Creating Different Types of Content
When you are just getting started with digital marketing it makes sense to start out focusing on one type of content. But as your company grows, you will need to create different types of content to connect with potential customers. For example, long-form content is better suited for a blog post or an e-book. Blogging provides an easy, inexpensive way to enhance your Marketing efforts, drive traffic to your site, and attract more customers. Visual Storytelling can also be a perfect medium to help a company’s message stand out from the crowd and nurture engaged consumers.

Mistake #2: Not Amplifying Your Content
So you published your first blog or you have some great new content to share but you aren’t sure where to start? Sometimes amplifying your content is just about finding the right social network for the type of content you want to share. How your content performs on social networks depends greatly on the purpose of each network. Take the time to find out what social networks your customers are on and focus your efforts on those specific networks. With some research and experimentation you will figure out what type of content performs best on what social network.

Mistake #3: Neglecting Analytics
So you have figured out the best way to amplify your content but are your efforts really getting the most bang for your buck? Marketing analytics enable you to see exactly how consumers respond to your content and campaigns. By effectively tracking leads and leads that convert into sales, you can see which specific marketing campaigns are contributing to your bottom line. For instance, let’s say you have a marketing e-mail campaign that is targeting leads from your site. Marketing analytics will not only tell you how many people clicked the e-mail and were directed to your site, but it will also let you know how many were converted into customers once they landed on the website. This permits you to track the success of the campaign and then compare it to other campaigns and their success.

You can’t rely on one-size-fits all marketing anymore. Your customers don’t all neatly fit into a single category. It is very important for companies to understand the wants, needs, and behaviors of their buyers. This is not always easy to uncover nor is it an exact science. However, the more you focus on knowing your customer, the more likely you are to continue your success. As always, you will need to test different approaches to see what works best for your company and continue to improve. If you are a vendor with BMT Micro and you need help with your Digital Marketing, we may be able to help.
